Overview

The Svilosa Biomass Project was implemented in Svilosa, Bulgaria. Bulgaria is dependent on imported coal for a large fraction of its industrial energy requirements. Government policy, both in terms of energy and environmental legislation, has sought to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, on the one hand, and, to significantly reduce the emissions generated from the combustion of fossil fuels in the industrial, heat and electricity sectors, on the other hand. The objective of the project was to use the wood wastes produced at the biomass plant to replace coal, thereby substantially reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from coal burning, and the methane emissions from decomposition of the waste material.

Benefits

  • Substantial reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions from coal burning
  • Substantial reduction of the the methane emissions from decomposition of the waste material
