Overview

The Mexico City Transport project promoted a shift towards low-polluting modes of transportation (primarily articulated buses) via the development of surface mass transport corridors and traffic management measures that integrate with the existing metro infrastructure. The project used methodology ACM 0016 – version 2 – Baseline methodology for mass rapid transit projects. The objective of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) Metrobus Insurgentes in the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México (Mexico City Metropolitan Area - MCMA) was to establish an efficient, safe, rapid, convenient, comfortable and effective modern mass transit system based on a BRT system. At the time of the implementation of the project, the MCMA had nearly 20 million inhabitants and the project, which included the BRT line Insurgentes, transported around 80 million passengers annually. Emission reductions were achieved through reducing GHG emissions per passenger/kilometer comparing conventional modes of transport with the BRT. The improvement of resource efficiency of transporting passengers in Mexico City was the main environmental benefit of the BRT system.
